GM Boosts Plant Production for Popular Midsize Pickup Trucks

Demand for the new Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon has been so strong that the automaker has had to resort to several measures to increase production.

Last March, it increased full-time employment to 3,500 hourly workers at its Wentzville, Mo., factory by adding a third shift, in anticipation of strong sales. As it turns out, the Colorado and Canyon have been even more popular than predicted.

Now, GM is hiring as many as 1,000 “flex” workers who would fill Saturday and Sunday shifts, boosting capacity for the popular midsize pickup trucks by more than 2,000 trucks a month.

The automaker even cut an unpaid lunch break at the Wentzville plant as part of a broader schedule reshuffling, which removed a six-minute production pause between shifts and cost the plant about 18 minutes of production every day. This should result in another 3,500 trucks every year.

New Low-Level Trims for Buick Regal and Verano

Buick has announced new low-level trims for the Buick Regal and Verano that should make it easier for customers to get into the entry-level luxury sedan segment.

Starting at $21,065, plus $925 destination, the Verano 1SV will cost $2,135 less than the next highest trim, providing a significant drop for customers. The best part of this deal is that the money is coming out of our cut at the Bill Walsh GM dealership, which means the car isn’t losing anything by being cheaper. The only difference is the lack of satellite radio.

The Regal 1SV offers even bigger savings compared to the next trim. It costs $27,065—a $2,925 drop—and it even keeps the leather seats. The downside here is that the engine loses about 77 horsepower and that combined fuel economy dips to 23 miles per gallon, though that’s only 1 mpg less than the next trim.

“We added this new base level to some models as a means of expanding the opportunity for more customers to experience Buick vehicles,” said Nick Richards, a GM spokesperson. “The addition of these trims will create an increased awareness and consideration of these vehicles when being compared to the competition.”
