2017 Chevy Bolt Regen Paddle Reduces Need to Brake

The 2017 Chevrolet Bolt is already breaking new ground in the world of electric vehicles. Now the automaker has announced that the need for braking in the city will be reduced thanks to the Chevy Bolt regen paddle.

The Regen on Demand paddle, or regenerative braking paddle, will let the driver access increased levels of regenerative braking. This is a feature that collects the energy produced when friction is used to slow the car down and uses the energy to recharge the battery of an electric or hybrid vehicle. Regenerative braking gives cars better battery range in the city because brakes are used more often.

The Bolt driver can toggle the regen paddle to avoid braking altogether, according to Chevy. By reducing your use of the brake pedal and increasing use of regenerative braking, you can boost your battery range by up to 5%. Chevy says that you can improve range even more by putting the Bolt in low gear while engaging the paddle. The paddle will also be available on the new Chevy Volt.

The Bolt’s 60-kWh battery and electric motor will produce 200 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque and will have a range of at least 200 miles. Sales for the Bolt will begin sometime this year.
